Arctic Hat is a hat that keeps your head cool, with an inner lining that uses evaporative water cooling. Does it really work? Here’s my Arctic hat overview.

Arctic Hat Overview

The Arctic Hat is a refreshing hat, as seen on television, which I first noticed in early 2019. After watching Arctic Air and Arctic Air Ultra I thought the cool hat was a bit weird, but I wanted to evaluate it to see if it really works.

I bought an Arctic hat for about $20 from As Seen On TV in Las Vegas. For two weeks I tested an Arctic hat in both the dry Nevada weather and the wet Florida climate.

I tested the Arctic Hat for the first time during a desert hike in Las Vegas and compared it to a normal baseball cap, which I also wet. Before taking a 20-minute walk, I applied cold water to the lining of an Arctic hat. He stayed pretty cool, and the sun couldn’t look me in the eyes or the neck. According to the advertisement, a hat must keep its head 20 degrees below room temperature. During my walk it was about 96 degrees Fahrenheit with 9% humidity. With a digital thermometer my head measures 87 degrees, while the lining of my hat measures 59.9 degrees. So the material on your head is colder, but it doesn’t necessarily keep your head 20 degrees colder.

20 minutes back, I’ll put cold water on a regular baseball cap. The Arctic hat kept my head cooler than this control hat and also offered more protection from the sun. I noticed that the baseball cap heats up much faster than the polar cap.

It’s not the first evaporative coolant I’ve considered. I also analyzed the refrigerator towel in 2017 and the maintenance towel in 2018 and compared Nevada and Florida because of the difference in humidity.

In my tests in Florida it was 88 degrees with 63% humidity. After a walk of about 15 minutes I noticed that the polar cap started to warm up. Evaporative cooling does not work well in a humid climate. The hat worked well in Nevada’s dry climate, but not so well in Florida’s humid climate. I thought I had hot water on my head, but it still worked well and blocked the sun.

Again, I used a normal hat as a check. I plunged him into the seawater and walked for a few minutes. Just like the Arctic hat, it quickly warms up and does not offer the same protection from the sun.

After all, the arctic hat is not exactly the style I would normally wear – and it doesn’t work so well in wet conditions – but it has allowed me to stay cooler in the dry climate of Las Vegas. It also offered some protection from the sun, although I’m not sure how different it is from the protection offered by a wide-brimmed hat. It turned out that the Florida sun was very hard during my trip there, and I ended up walking around in an Arctic hat – not because of the evaporative cold, but because it protects the neck and shoulders better than a normal hat.

If you live in a dry area, I think the Arctic hat will help, but if you live in a wetter area, I suggest you have limited expectations.

You may be surprised to find that there are different cooling head covers on the market. The mission gives away a baseball cap and a bucket. Colored neck protector, maybe you should consider something like this fish hat with wide fields.
