Our Best Electric Toothbrushes – 2020 Rating

In the following paragraphs you can learn a little more about each brush and why we chose it as the best in its category.

1. Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4100

Best of all

Overview Product Evaluation Prices
Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4100 Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4100 10,291 investigations $49.95 View of the Amazon

As close to perfection as possible. An impressive electric toothbrush that cleans well, looks great, is easy to use and has a longer battery life than most. Of great value, it even reminds us of the time when the brush head was changed.

In terms of the number of features offered, the options below are for the best Oral-b and Sonicare, but we consider them to be the best overall choice after considering the lowest price.

2. Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart

The best thing about money is that it’s not a problem.

The best sound

Overview Product Evaluation Prices
Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart 1298 examinations $229.99 $199.90 View of the Amazon

If it’s not about money, it’s a toothbrush you can count on. It’s safe to say it’s Sonicare’s best electric toothbrush and number one in our ranking.

Innovations range from brush head replacement memories to Bluetooth connectivity and charging. Excellent and first-class experience in the field of dental cleaning.

3. Oral-B Genius X

Best Oral-B

Overview Product Evaluation Prices
Oral B Spirit X Oral B Spirit X 1,000 examinations $219.94 $151.99 View of the Amazon

This is the oral equivalent of DiamondClean Smart.

The add-on application for DiamondClean Smart is a bit better for us, but a bit more expensive. Oral B-sprayers are also more economical.

The Genius X has multiple cleaning modes, a built-in timer to help you brush for the time you need, and a pressure sensor to help prevent damage to your teeth and gums.

The package contains a premium case in which you can load the brush. This is an excellent option for those who are constantly on the move.

In terms of performance, it is the best B-mouth brush in the world, but these features are not cheap.

4. Fairy tale Will Sonic FW-507

A better budget

Overview Product Evaluation Prices
Fairy tale FW-507 Fairy tale FW-507 1735 exams $29.99 View of the Amazon

Fairywill may not be a brand known to many people, but this Chinese company makes some good products.

The FW-507 is a toothbrush with 3 different cleaning modes, from standard to more sensitive, with less motor power.

A built-in 2-minute timer and a 30-second pacemaker encourage your dentist to recommend 2 minutes of brushing.

It is a thin and light toothbrush with a built-in battery that lasts 30 days between recharges. It’s much longer than most toothbrushes. When a recharge is required, it is connected via a USB cable.

You pay a slightly higher purchase price, but in the box you get 8 nozzles, which reduces operating costs.

There’s also a handy travel case for people on the go to protect your toothbrush when not in use.

Manual for purchasers of electric toothbrushes

The answers above are a guide for the purchaser when choosing a toothbrush.

We have tried to give you the information we find most useful for you, without being overloaded with details.

Explanation of our choice for a better total value

At the top of this page, we’ve listed our recommendations for choosing the best electric toothbrush.

Part of the difficulty in answering the question is understanding what people mean by best; do they mean best after considering all factors or best in terms of technology and performance?

In fact, we think people like to know what the best electric toothbrush is without spending a lot of money. A brush that is affordable, but has the most important characteristics. That’s why we chose the Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4100 as the best product because . :

  • It’s not that expensive.
  • It has a built-in timer of 2 minutes.
  • There’s a 30-second square there.
  • This reminds me when the brush head needs to be replaced.
  • It comes with a pressure sensor.
  • It has a long battery life.

Pressure sensors, timers and quads are features that we think are worth paying for and are not always supplied with a slightly cheaper brush. In the next section we will discuss the other characteristics and their importance.

For those who really want the best in performance (and if silver isn’t a problem), we recommend Genius X or DiamondClean Smart toothbrushes, which are also the best Oral-B or Sonicare electric toothbrushes.

They may offer additional cleaning methods and intelligent technology, but that comes at a price, and for some it will be exaggerated.

ProtectiveClean 4100, with its fast and regular brush strokes, contributes to deep cleaning, removing as much deposits as possible.

An integrated timer and a pacemaker stimulate an even cleaning of the oral cavity. The pressure sensor warns you if you are cleaning too hard, which is causing gum recession, and the brush head replacement system tells you when it’s time to replace the current brush head with a new one. Damaged, worn or damaged hair can damage teeth and gums, this technology can stop this damage.

How important are other characteristics and factors?

In the next section, we look at other questions you may have when purchasing an electric toothbrush. It was created following an extensive review of the range of brushes available in the United States.

To make it clear, we have marked each of them with what we think is important, namely medium and low.

How important is the timer?

Great importance

If there was only one function in the toothbrushes we recommend, the timer would be our first choice, and its importance is greatly underestimated.

Too few people recommend the dentist to brush their teeth for 2 minutes.  Otherwise, your oral hygiene could be compromised.

When brushing your teeth, it’s too easy to get distracted, it’s wrong to estimate the time and think you’ve brushed longer than you actually have.

The built-in timer helps you focus on the track and brush your teeth for the time you need.  The countdown from the moment the brush is activated will warn you when your 2 minutes are up. It’s only after two minutes that you stop brushing your teeth.

Some brushes even switch off at the end of a 2-minute cleaning cycle (this is another desirable feature you may notice).

Our main recommendation, of course, is that the Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4100 has a built-in timer of 2 minutes.

How important is the quadriceps?

Great importance

In fact, this is another type of timer that works in combination with the already mentioned 2-minute timer.

The Quadpacker is a very useful addition and can seriously affect the way you brush all the teeth in your mouth.

Illuminating the quadruple pack with an electric toothbrush helps us brush our teeth evenly.  It is not necessary to clean only the upper teeth or only the front teeth for 2 minutes, they all need the same attention.

The Quadpacker works mainly by breaking the mouth and cleaning in 2 minutes in 4 parts.

2 minutes equals 120 seconds.  Split 4 lanes, that gives you 30 seconds.

Imagine now that you divide your mouth into 4 sections, you have the teeth upper right in section 1, the teeth upper left in section 2, the teeth lower right in section 3 and the teeth lower left in section 4.

The idea is that you clean each section for 30 seconds.

The Quadpacker will warn you how you entered these 30-second intervals. As soon as you receive an alarm, proceed to the next section.

The way this signal manifests itself really varies from brush to brush, but you usually get a short pause in the brush movement, which also changes the sound of the brush.  In most cases, this is more than enough to warn you that it is time to change the quadrant.

At the end of the 2-minute brushing period, you should have cleaned all 4 sections and cleaned all teeth in your mouth evenly.

Our #1 recommended brush, the Sonicare 4100, contains a quadruple pack.

How important is the pressure sensor?

Medium importance

This is a small matter, but one that we consider to be very undervalued.

It is especially useful for new users of electric toothbrushes, but even those who have been using an electric toothbrush for many years can still benefit from it.

Toothbrush bristles should only be removed from the teeth and gums.  You don’t have to brush your teeth aggressively to remove plaque and bacteria.

Unfortunately, because many of us have never learned how to brush our teeth properly, we brush with great force.  Over time, this can lead to gum recession, which should be avoided if possible.

If the gums come loose, brushing too hard will also wear down the outer surface of the tooth, what dentists call abrasions. The wear itself can lead to sensitivity to hot and cold foods and drinks.

In this way, the pressure sensor can monitor the force with which you brush your teeth and warn you if you become too aggressive.

When activated, the sensor will in most cases warn of changes in sound, vibrations in the handle and in some cases light in the so-called visible pressure sensor.

During this time, the best brushes also reduce the speed of the bristles to prevent damage to teeth and gums.  When the pressure is released, the brush returns to its normal brushing performance.

The pressure sensor will help and protect you and gently remind you to use a little less energy and keep your smile healthy.

As you would expect, our number one toothbrush, the Sonicare 41000, is equipped with a pressure sensor.

How important is the price?

Medium importance

Our experience tells us that most people feel that the more you spend, the better the electric toothbrush performs and the cleaner you become with it.

The reality is that this is not the case.

Although the most expensive brushes can give better results, these brushes are often more expensive because they contain features and accessories that are not essential.

Switching to the simplest and cheapest electric toothbrushes brings you many advantages.

Even if you can afford and justify the best models, it won’t help if you don’t use the right cleaning technique or brush at the right time.

In most cases, if you spend more than $50 on a toothbrush, the efficiency will decrease for every dollar you spend on a toothbrush.

Our main recommendation is the Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4100.  It is one of the cheapest Sonicare models available today, and is offered at very competitive prices.

However, spending a little more can be good for you, your mouth and your health.

How important is battery life?

Medium importance

Many people often want a long-lasting toothbrush, but they rarely need it because when it’s not in use, it’s on the charging stand in the bathroom.

Therefore, battery life should not be an important factor in your purchase decision, but it should be considered, especially if you travel frequently or cannot recharge your toothbrush regularly.

In recent years, the performance and life of the battery has improved. Most brushes are at the same level as the others, with an average of about 2 weeks of use between loads.

Normally, the cheaper the brush, the shorter the battery life, but this is not always the case.

It can be useful to go away for a week or two, knowing that you don’t have to bring a charging station to charge your battery.

If you need a durable battery, Philips Sonicare is the best solution for you.

How important is the cost of a replacement nozzle?

Medium importance

An electric toothbrush is a long-term investment that benefits oral health.

The cost of the recommended replacement of the brush heads every three months can affect the operating costs over a longer period of time.  So you can consider this value before making a decision.

In general, Oral B brush heads are less expensive than Sonicare single brush heads and cost $5 and $8, respectively.

To be able to compare these costs, you need to purchase 4 new sprinklers per year.  However, it is often possible to purchase large quantities or conclude transactions that slightly reduce overall costs.

In most cases you have the choice of a third party brush head (compatible with the brush head). There may not be the same selection and the quality is a little less, but there are very good options at very attractive prices for both Sonicare and Oral-B brands.

Beware of fake buzzards that look real but are often not. If the price is too good to be true, it probably is.

Is it wise to buy a travel brush together with a travel bag?

Medium importance

This is not the first thing to think about when buying an electric toothbrush, but a travel case can be very practical, even if you don’t travel regularly.

What is often a plastic case with a handle and up to 2 nozzles makes it much easier to carry your toothbrush and brush heads when needed.

In this case, the risk of damage – especially to the bristles of the brush head – is reduced. It is also less likely that the brush is accidentally activated. Excess moisture and toothpaste in your head stays in the suitcase, not on anything in your pocket; nobody likes toothpaste stains on your clothes!

For high-end models, such as the Oral B Genius Series or the Sonicare DiamondClean Series, you can even refill your toothbrush in the travel case.  This means that there is no need for a charging station, which is perfectly suited for normal travellers.

How important is the cleaning method for chewing gum?

Medium importance

Not everyone needs this diet, but if you are in the early stages of gum disease or are sensitive to tooth brushing, this diet can help make your gums more tolerant and generally healthier.

The cleaning mode for the gums is less powerful than the standard cleaning mode and moves the brush head less aggressively, but in a way that cleans the gums and stimulates blood flow to the gums.

The available mode can serve as a reminder that the gums sometimes need to be cleaned.

What is the importance of the sensitive cleaning method?

Medium importance

Like the way chewing gum is cleaned, it’s not the way everyone needs it.

The motor tends to move more slowly, allowing hair to move smoothly but efficiently over the teeth and gums.

It can be useful if you have sensitive teeth and gums and is especially useful for people who suffer from gum disease or who are undergoing dental surgery.

How important is the lighting mode?

Less important

The cleaning method is probably overestimated, it’s not what you need with an electric toothbrush.

Bleaching mode is usually just a long cleaning cycle (more than 2 minutes) that allows you to take more time to pay more attention to the front teeth that are most visible to others.

No electric toothbrush, with or without whitening mode, can actually whiten teeth.

All that happens is that the power and effectiveness of the toothbrush cleans the tooth surface at a higher level and removes substances that have affected and discolored the teeth.  This restores the natural colour or the natural white that was hidden under the stains.

What is the importance of speech removal mode?

Less important

Don’t forget to clean the tongue as an important part of oral hygiene, but the special mode for this is not very important in the functional scheme of the brush – it’s not worth spending extra money on it.

The tongue is home to a large number of bacteria and is often one of the main causes of bad breath.

After brushing the teeth, brushing the tongue by pulling the head of the brush over the tongue several times really helps to refresh the mouth and is for some people a remedy for bad breath.

The speech cleaning mode is simply a shorter, less powerful mode that is more convenient than the other modes available on the brush.

How important is the shape and size of the brush head?

Less important

Research has shown that small, round brush heads, such as those used in Oral-B electric toothbrushes, remove plaque better and significantly improve oral health.

However, these studies have often been carried out under strict conditions and the reality is that each electric toothbrush has significant advantages over a manual toothbrush.

To get the best results, you need to maintain your brushing technique and time, and even the most scientifically advanced toothbrush head can’t control it, so it’s up to you.

Although it’s worth paying a little attention, especially if you have a small mouth.  With the small round brush head, you may be able to reach areas of your mouth that other brush heads would not reach.

Choosing the right brush cleaning technique is more important than the size of the nozzle.

What is the purpose of the Genius and DiamondClean Smart features?

Less important

The intellectual functions offered today can be very useful, but they are far from essential and they are usually paid for.

By using smart features like real-time tracking in Genius X and DiamondClean Smart in the right way, you can learn how to brush better and improve your oral health.

You can also make the way you use and handle the brush a little more comfortable.

The Sonicare BrushSync Brush Head Change System is an excellent example of how this technology can be put to good use – reminding you exactly when to change your brush head. But it’s a luxury, and you only have to pay for it if you shop without a budget.

Do I need Bluetooth?

Less important

It doesn’t matter, and we won’t encourage you to spend much more money on a Bluetooth brush if you think you won’t use it properly.

You need to invest some time to get the most out of Bluetooth, which can mean changing your lifestyle.

Built-in Bluetooth technology allows you to transfer brush data to your smartphone. This information can be used to teach you how to improve your technique and thus your oral health.

We recognise that there are clearly significant benefits for some users.  The best blue toothbrushes are like having your dentist on hand every time you brush your teeth.

However, this requires you to use it and integrate it into your daily life, so think about doing this before spending extra money.

What are the benefits of an electric toothbrush?

The main advantages of owning an electric toothbrush are listed below:

  • A constant nourishment for cleaning the teeth
  • Can remove up to 100% more plaque than manual cleaning with a brush.
  • Reduces cavities and improves the condition of the gums.
  • Can help eliminate bad breath.
  • Timer and packages to reward 2 minutes of clean time
  • The different types of cleaning
  • Different types of brush heads for different results
  • The bristles fade to remind you when to change the brush head.
  • Relatively low cost of living
  • Can improve your oral hygiene.

Is it worth investing in an electric toothbrush?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

The increased efficiency with which they clean, the comfort they offer and the way they encourage you to polish at the right time can certainly pay off.

Although there is an initial purchase price, it will be compensated over time as you may have fewer or cheaper dental bills, not to mention healthier teeth and gums.

Buying at a reasonable price contributes to the return on investment. Our main recommendation is ProtectiveClean 4100 – it contains the most important functions we recommend, but does not accumulate unnecessary additional functions.

Is an electric toothbrush better than a manual toothbrush?

In short, the answer is as follows: Yes, for effective toothbrushing, the electric toothbrush is preferable to the manual toothbrush.

We’ll be the first to say that a manual toothbrush is suitable for daily dental cleaning, but studies and clinical trials show how best to use an electric toothbrush.

The most important thing is to brush your teeth with the right technique, twice a day for two minutes.

Do electric toothbrushes damage teeth?

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

When used correctly, a power toothbrush will not damage teeth or gums.

Do electric toothbrushes cause gum recession?

No, a toothbrush on its own doesn’t cause gum recession.

It can be exaggerated or speed up the decay, but it is the result of a (human) error by the user, not a brushstroke. This effect is also possible with a manual toothbrush.

Do electric toothbrushes whiten teeth?

No, electric toothbrushes don’t whiten teeth.

Powerful toothbrushes can help prevent and remove stains on your teeth, but no brush can make teeth whiter than their natural whiteness.

The regularity with which you brush your teeth, your diet, your lifestyle and your toothpaste can all be important to you.

What is the service life of electric toothbrushes?

The average lifespan is 3 to 5 years.

Manufacturers generally offer a two-year warranty if the brush fails sooner.

Many brushes last much longer and we know that many people still use toothbrushes that are 10 years old.

Can you use a regular electric toothbrush?

Although nearly one in ten (9.7%) reported sharing a toothbrush (Oral Health Foundation, 2014), this is not recommended.

Bristles can hide bacteria and microorganisms which, when used together, can have a negative effect on health.

The interchangeable accessories of the electric toothbrush make it easy and convenient to share the toothbrush handle.

In fact, we recommend splitting the handle (not the brush head) as this is a great way to reduce your operating costs and add value to your toothbrush.

Can electric toothbrushes get wet?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

With a few exceptions, electric toothbrushes are designed to be cleaned under the tap, wiped with a cloth and brought into contact with water.

Sensitive electronic devices are hermetically sealed in the handle of the brush and are equipped with measures to prevent the ingress of water.

Different manufacturers give different advice and recommendations, for example on the use of the shower. Under no circumstances should the brush be immersed in water.
